The Specialized Cooperative Center in Reproduction Research is a science-based center that focuses on studies of male infertility and its biological basis. Projects supported by this center include: - the role of inadequate testosterone concentration in human male infertility
- the mechanisms by which testosterone regulates the formation of spermatozoa from precursor cells (spermatogenesis), and particularly how testosterone protects cells undergoing spermatogenesis from apoptotic death
- how testosterone functions to regulate spermatogenesis through interaction with androgen receptors
- how the cells that develop into spermatozoa interact with Sertoli cells, and thus how spermatogenesis is coordinated and regulated by paracrine interactions.
By design, the highly integrated studies of this Center extend from the bench to the bedside. In this way, the Center coordinates the development of new knowledge that leads to clinical and population applications. |
