This annual cash award was established in 1982 in memory of Dr. Frederik B. Bang, chair of the department from 1953 to 1981, to recognize a student from any department of the School who has passed his or her preliminary oral examination and is engaged in doctoral research on a topic relevant to pathobiology. Selection of a winner will be made by a special committee and will be based on the scientific merit of the student applicant's research topic. The committee consists of two departmental faculty members and a faculty member from another department in the School. The committee will be appointed by the chair of our department. Applications are due in March each year, and applicants may be interviewed by the committee. The recipient is to present a departmental seminar at the conclusion of his/her research. This monetary award was established in 2000 to recognize his distinguished career as a physician scientist at Hopkins. The scholarship provides tuition assistance to students who have completed a medical degree and wish to pursue a further degree in public health in the MMI department. This monetary scholarship was established in 2000 by the estate of Ruth G. Whittler, who received her doctorate in 1944. This scholarship supports students in the laboratory sciences in the department of MMI.
These fellowships have been established through the generosity of alumni of our department to provide financial aid for the graduate education of our doctoral students. Students will be named, on an annual basis, as Honorary Fellows by a committee consisting of the Graduate Officer and the chairs of the Graduate Program Committee and the Admissions and Financial Support Committee. Academically outstanding students may be renominated in a subsequent year. All students, new and continuing, will be considered. In addition to academic excellence, the research accomplishments of students will be taken into consideration. The recipients will be expected to write letters, including biographical information, to the benefactors of the awards or to their estates. The recipients' biographical information provided may be used for announcement of the awards in one of the University's publications and will be kept on file in the department. The Bliss Fellowship has been established through the generosity of an alumna of the department, Dr. Eleanor A. Bliss. The Causey Fellowship has been established by Drs.
