Center for Immunization Research

Ruth Karron, Director

Established in 1985 by Dr. Mary Lou Clements-Mann, the Center for Immunization Research (CIR) is one of the nation's premier vaccine research centers. The CIR works to facilitate research activities in vaccine development, evaluation, and policy, both in the United States and in less-developed countries.

Recent research conducted at the CIR has led to the development of the FDA-licensed vaccines:

  • FluMist© Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal
  • Gardasil® Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (Types 6, 11, 16, 18) Recombinant Vaccine
  • VAQTA® Hepatitis A Vaccine, Inactivated

Clinical Vaccine Trials
CIR investigators primarily conduct Phase I and II safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy trials of new vaccine candidates. The CIR is currently conducting phase I and/or II trials for a number of infectious agents that are major contributors to global morbidity and mortality. These include:

  • HIV
  • Human Parainfluenza Virus
  • Avian Influenza
  • Dengue Fever
  • West Nile Virus
  • Malaria
  • Enterotoxigenic E.Coli

Education, Consulting, Mentoring
The CIR is the world leader in training other research professionals to develop the skills and infrastructure needed to design, conduct, and evaluate clinical vaccine trials, with a focus on applied Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

The CIR also offers a wide variety of resources designed to address the diverse needs of clinical sites. We have experience working with sites transitioning from epidemiological field trials to clinical vaccine trials, to well-established trial sites wishing to refine operations. Our range of services includes:

  • GCP certification workshops
  • Consulting on development issues and site practices
  • On-site mentoring and assessment
