Degree Programs and Areas of Concentration

We offer master's and doctoral degrees in nine areas of concentration.  Both master's programs and all three doctoral programs have faculty directors.  Course and track descriptions, along with information about the degree programs and specifics about the areas offered by Epidemiology, can be found in the Department's Academic Guide.  For application information and deadlines, please contact our academic coordinator, Frances S. Burman.

Areas of Concentration

General Epidemiology & Methodology
Lisa P. Jacobson, ScD; Director
Offers research and training opportunities in almost all areas of chronic disease epidemiology, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diseases of childhood and includes advanced methodology training in epidemiologic methods.

Cancer Epidemiology
Elizabeth Platz, ScD; Director
The Cancer Epidemiology Program offers a vibrant mix of didactic training, student-faculty discussions, and research experience in cancer etiology, prevention and control.   Three integrated training tracks are offered:  cancer etiology and prevention, genetic epidemiology of cancer, and cancer control.  Course offerings include a two term course “Etiologic and Preventive Aspects of Cancer” and an advanced second year course “Methodologic Issues in Cancer Epidemiology”.  Students and faculty participate in bi-weekly journal clubs and research in progress seminars.  Faculty research efforts extend from studies of lifestyle factors associated with cancer risk (e.g., tobacco use, diet), to the broad area of the molecular epidemiology of cancer to the chemoprevention of cancer.  Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of population-based cancer research, faculty in the Departments of Health Policy and Management and Environmental Health Sciences are critical to the study of the contribution of behavioral lifestyle factors and environmental factors to cancer incidence and mortality.  A close collaboration with the George W. Comstock Center for Public Health Research and Prevention located in Hagerstown Maryland provides students and faculty with community-based research opportunities for studies of chronic disease etiology and prevention.  Integral to the program is a close affiliation with the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Cardiovascular Epidemiology
Josef Coresh MD, PhD , Director
Focuses on inter-disciplinary training on the epidemiology of the leading cause of death in the US.  The program integrates knowledge on all aspects of the disease: biology, behavior, treatment and prevention.  Training emphasizes a collaborative approach and active participation in research.  A number of large ongoing cohort studies and clinical trials provide a rich environment for the conduct of research. The main didactic course focuses on risk factors for cardiovascular disease and strategies for prevention.  Seminar style courses offer a more in depth understanding of disease pathophysiology and clinical management (field trip course). Many trainees are based in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research and are mentored by individuals active in both population based and clinical research. Among other outstanding collaborations, the program benefits from close ties with the Johns Hopkins University divisions of General Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Endocrinology. Tuition and stipend funding for doctoral candidates and post-doctoral trainees (Masters after MD or another degree or research after a PhD) is available on a merit basis through an NIH training program for US citizens or permanent residents.

Clinical Epidemiology
Neil Powe, MD, Director
Focuses on the use of epidemiologic methods in clinical research and practice. Special emphasis is placed on the role of epidemiology in infectious disease prevention and health promotion. Program activities are enhanced by the close collaborative relationships between the Department of Epidemiology and clinical departments of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Clinical Trials
Kay Dickersin, MA, PhD, Director
An interschool Center devoted to the promotion of clinical trials as a method of evaluation of preventive and therapeutic approaches to health problems.  To promote the use of clinical trials as a method of evaluation and to facilitate research and teaching efforts in relation to the practice of clinical trials and other studies involving the evaluation of preventive and therapeutic approaches to health problems.

Epidemiology of Aging
Linda P. Fried, MD, Director
Focuses broadly on the determinants of health, disease and function in older adults.  Offers multidisciplinary training in methods and theories needed for the study of older populations.  Strong ties exist with several multi-departmental training grants and programs.  This training program also is connected to numerous large research projects including both observational and interventional studies.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology
David Celentano, ScD, and Taha El-Tahir Taha, MD, PhD, Directors
Provides knowledge and background needed for teaching and investigating the epidemiology of infectious diseases. Emphasis is on the principles and methods that can be applied to infectious diseases caused by all classes of organisms in a variety of settings.

Human Genetics / Genetic Epidemiology
Terri H. Beaty, PhD, Director
Focuses on the study of genetic and environmental factors and their interaction in disease and normal variation. Broadly based training, utilizing the combined staff and facilities of the Schools of Public Health and Medicine and the faculty of Arts and Sciences, is available through the Department to prepare qualified students for professional work in human genetics and genetic epidemiology, including research, teaching, and public health programs and services.

Occupational & Environmental Epidemiology
Genevieve Matanoski, MD, DrPH, Director
Concentrates on the epidemiology of diseases associated with industrial and other occupational exposures, as well as with environmentally induced illness in general. Studies are carried out in conjunction with industry and government and provide excellent opportunities for student research. Many collaborative efforts exist with the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.
