J. Craig Venter, Ph.D.

Dr. Venter received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1975.  He then took a faculty position at SUNY Buffalo.  In 1987 he moved to the NIH, where he soon became Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology and Director of the NINDS DNA facility.    In 1992 founded and presided over The Institute for Genomics Research (TIGR), and in 1998 he founded Celera Genomics, both in Rockville, MD.   Last year he founded and became president of the J. Craig Venter Foundation, the Center for the Advancement of Genomics, and the Institute for Biological Energy Alternatives.   Dr. Venter has been one of the world’s most influential scientists in the genomics revolution, spearheading the decoding of the human genome as well as the genomes of other living organisms.  Through his efforts he has inspired a generation of young scientists to seek solutions to human health problems with functional genomics and proteomics.   His new Centers and Foundations provide support for the most innovative investigators in these endeavors.
