| Our goal is to develop outstanding, independent investigators interested in lung disease. To accomplish this, the program provides multidisciplinary training opportunities in lung disease research at both the pre- and post-doctoral levels. Each trainee develops in-depth expertise in a single area of investigation. Moreover, the multidisciplinary nature of the program guarantees exposure to work in other scientific arenas. This crosstalk provides both a stimulating intellectual atmosphere and a valuable perspective for the trainees. In response to the revolutionary changes occurring in the structure of health care in the United States, growing national concern about the shortage of academic clinical investigators, and increasing interest on the part of our trainees, we instituted a Clinical Scientist Research Training Program. This program will offer advanced research training leading to a master's degree in behavioral science, biomedical ethics, clinical trials, epidemiology, or health services research to postdoctoral MD fellows who have completed their clinical training in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Three years of training will be required, one for course work and two for these research under guidance of a research mentor. |
