Drug and Alcohol Dependence Epidemiology

Substance use disorders are among the leading causes of disability in the world, and improved strategies to reduce their burden are needed. The Drug and Alcohol Dependence Epidemiology Faculty in the Department of Mental Health conducts research that advances our understanding of the etiology and natural history of substance use; develops, implements, and evaluates interventions to prevent and control substance use; and critically examines substance abuse services and systems of care to improve substance abuse outcomes. Recent scientific advances in genomics, brain imaging and informatics present new opportunities for accelerating the discovery and translation of findings into public health gains.
