September 24, 2013 —The Second Annual Sight and Life Nutrition Leadership Award was presented to Professor Robert Black by Klaus Kraemer, Director of Sight and Life. President Jakaya Kikwete of the United Republic of Tanzania gave the keynote address.
Black was honored—along with his colleagues from the Lancet Maternal and Child Nutrition Study Group—for two sets of influential nutrition articles published in 2008 and 2013. The first series, published in 2008, was recognized as a key component in the development of the Scaling-up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, a global initiative led by last year’s award winner, Dr. David Nabarro. These research articles helped focus the global community’s attention on undernutrition and guided the development of interventions that continue today improving nutrition and, thus, the lives of millions, around the world.
The 2013 Lancet Maternal and Child Nutrition Series—published in June of this year—builds a foundation for new and improved efforts to fight maternal and child undernutrition. While documenting past successes, the series underscore the tremendous and persistent global undernutrition burden. Black and his colleagues were honored not only for their esteemed research, but also for the aid and support from the global community it has attracted and for the rigorous evidence base it provides for developing successful interventions in the future.
