The Department of Environmental Health and Engineering offers a joint bachelors/masters program, three masters level programs and two doctoral level programs with various tracks.
The MHS in Environmental Health degree program is designed for students interested in graduate-level preparation for careers in medicine and the environmental health sciences. The MHS is a nine-month, coursework-based academic degree for individuals who want to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nature of associations between the environment and human health. The curriculum provides opportunities to learn how environmental hazards in air, water and food and biological agents affect human health at both individual and population levels. Students who graduate with this degree are prepared to pursue medical or other doctoral level degrees, and have the knowledge to obtain positions in government agencies, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.
The ScM program in Environmental Health is a two-year degree program intended for individuals with a strong interest in pursuing laboratory, field or population-based computational research in the environmental health sciences. Graduates will be especially prepared for further training and research at the PhD level. The degree also prepares students for careers in medicine and others may wish to pursue positions in the private sector, federal agencies and non-governmental organizations. Students can focus their coursework in areas that reflect faculty research relating to mechanisms of toxicity and disease, exposure science and epidemiology or sustainability and health. The first year is coursework-based and during the second year students are engaged in research full time culminating in a publishable masters thesis.
Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) Track in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene—Professional
The MSPH Track in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is designed to prepare students to become leading environmental health professionals capable of addressing problems in environmental and occupational settings. This track is part of the Department’s Education and Research Center for Occupational Safety and Health (ERC) which is sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). There is a part-time option. Courses are built around media-rich instruction to provide learning experiences that are equivalent to those offered with the face-to-face courses.
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) Track in Toxicity Testing and Human Health Risk Assessment of Environmental Agents – Professional
The MSPH Track in Toxicity Testing and Human Health Risk Assessment of Environmental Agents is intended for individuals who wish to pursue a career or enhance their current activities in risk assessment with emphasis on the combined use of traditional in vivo and emerging in vitro and in silico models. The program addresses the increasing incorporation of new toxicity testing modalities and their resulting data into the risk assessment paradigm. Graduates of the track will be prepared to play an essential scientific role in the evaluation of toxicity testing data and their utilization in the regulatory process at federal agencies and in the private and industrial sectors. This track is also available in an online/part-time format.
The basic research in this track is focused on discovering novel molecular mechanisms that drive the pathophysiology of major chronic diseases to develop prevention and therapeutic strategies to improve public health. Students in this PhD program will engage in academic training in specific areas of environmental health with in-depth courses in molecular, toxicologic, physiologic, immunologic, and pathophysiologic sciences.
This track offers research and training opportunities in key topic areas relevant to environmental and occupational health. These areas include air, water, the food system, early life exposures, metals and synthetic chemicals, environmental microbiology, the built environment, global environmental health, molecular and integrated epidemiology, and the investigation of susceptibility factors and effective interventions.
The school-wide DrPH program with a concentration in Environmental Health emphasizes the application of in-depth public health knowledge to problem solving and the development of skills necessary to assess and solve occupational and environmental health challenges at regional, national and international levels. This program appeals to public health students and practitioners who want to improve lives and prevent disease. Though most DrPH students pursue their studies part-time and maintain an active public health practice through their work, full-time enrollment is an option. Part-time status may be requested at any time during a full-time student’s academic career and allows students up to nine academic years to complete the Program.
The Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, offers a major in Public Health Studies for undergraduates interested in careers in public health. The major is tailored to prepare individuals for careers that have a basic science foundation, including medicine, and careers oriented to health policy, management systems (domestic and international), social and behavioral sciences, and quantitative sciences fundamental to public health.
