Description:

Reviews current research in molecular genetics, exploring specific molecular techniques and applications. Students critically assess research results in assigned papers to determine their application to genetics medicine and genetic counseling.

Student Evaluation: Student evaluation based on two oral presentations and class participation.
Learning Objective:

After successfully completing this course, you will (1) appreciate the types of techniques used in the molecular diagnostic lab; (2) understand the issues underlying molecular diagnosis for a variety of disorders, including Fragile X syndrome, cystic fibrosis, achondroplasia, fetal Rh typing, colorectal cancer, and thrombophilias; and (3) understand how to interpret molecular genetic results.
