Description:

Examines the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of human genetics and genomics through the lens of significant and field-defining periods and events in the history of the field. Examines the ELSI raised by those events, and how the events have shaped and defined the current state of the science and emerging scientific, ethical, policy and public health issues.
Student Evaluation: Class participation, brief written assignments, and paper at end of term.
Learning Objective:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

• Identify some of the defining moments in the ELSI history of human genetics, and discuss why they are important; • Analyze the ethical, legal and social issues at play during these moments in history; and • Discuss how these defining moments have influenced contemporary and emerging issues in the genetic sciences.
