Description:

Introduces non-lawyers to the important role played by the law in determining the public's health. Students analyze judicial opinions, statutes, and regulations in classroom discussions. Covers substantive legal topics including the balance between individual rights and public health initiatives, privacy, medical malpractice, and informed consent.
Student Evaluation: Student evaluation based on a final exam or a term paper (students choice).
Learning Objective:

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.To acquaint you with the process of legal reasoning.

2.To provide you with an understanding of substantive law in several areas relevant to public health.

3.To acquaint you with the process of legal research.

4.To familiarize you with aspects of legal terminology, and to demystify aspects of the law for non lawyers.

5.To provide you with a view of how the law deals with biomedical and health information.

6.To train you to identify legal issues.

7.To provide you with an understanding of when you need to consult legal counsel.
