Completion of basic courses in epidemiology and biostatistics.

Description
Primarily focuses on the use of epidemiologic methods in the planning and evaluation of health services. Reviews various epidemiologic techniques and designs as they relate to assessments of health care needs, priority setting, risk assessment, regional health planning, access to care and program evaluation. Presents topics in combination of lectures, laboratories and class discussions. Lectures focus on the application of epidemiologic methods in health priority setting, health care needs, evaluation of health interventions and the epidemiologic approach to decision-making. Laboratory sessions and discussions focus on issues in health services research within the practice environments of primary and public health programs.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply and integrate an epidemiological framework in the design, planning and evaluation of public health programs and health services
  2. Critically review and utilize key epidemiological concepts, measures and procedures for health priority setting and unmet health needs assessments in the context of public health programs
  3. Apply the epidemiological measures of RR (relative risk) and AR (population attributable risk) in preparing epidemiological profiles and targeting public health interventions
  4. Describe and utilize quasi-experimental and epidemiological study designs in health impact evaluation of public health programs and services
