Description
Analyzes the consequences of the business cycle in population health by identifying the main variations in mortality causes, diseases incidence, mental and self-perceived health. Considers different country experiences and time-frame within the business cycle , as well as the magnitude of the economic fluctuations. Topics include the possible mechanisms of transmission, such as changes in working conditions and employment, lifestyles and living conditions that can result in an unequal distribution of health risk among populations groups. Discusses different methodological approaches commonly used and their limitations. Addresses the importance of public policies that could reduce the adverse effects of economic cycles.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. identify main factors and mechanisms that may affect health status in an economic crisis
  2. identify the elements for a research design or health report
  3. evaluate public policies that can mitigate the adverse effects of business cycle
