.....Overview of the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS)

The Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) is a multi-center cohort study that has been implemented by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to determine cardiovascular and other consequences of sleep-disordered breathing. This study will test whether sleep-related breathing disorders are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, all cause mortality and hypertension.

The study began in Washington County with the enrollment of 1184 participants between December 1995 and January 1998. These participants were already enrolled in the ongoing cohort studies: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, The Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS). Selection of these participants was based on age, gender, and self-reported snoring history. Upon enrollment in the SHHS, the participants received a home visit from a crew of technicians. At their home the participants underwent a series of measurements of seated blood pressure, weight, and neck girth, as well as a variety of questionnaires regarding their health, sleep habits, medical history, quality of life, and medication use. After completion of these measurements and questionnaires, the participants were fitted with portable polysomnogram (PSG) equipment which recorded the following: EEG, EOG, chin EMG, pulse, oxygen saturation nasal/oral airflow, chest wall and abdominal movement, heart rate, and body position.

Approximately one year after their original home visit, the SHHS participants received a home visit to measure their weight and blood pressure. At the time of this visit the participants were also interviewed about their current health and use of medications.

The administrative structure of the Sleep Heart Health Study comprises the Coordinating Center at the University of Washington (years 1995-2000) and The Johns Hopkins University (currently), the Sleep Reading Center at Case-Western Reserve University, the Project Officer from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and six Investigative Centers (University of Arizona, Boston University, University of California-Davis/University of Pittsburgh, The Johns Hopkins University, University of Minnesota, and New York University) which interact with their specific parent studies.

In September 2000, the SHHS began a second phase of data collection which consisted of a third home visit for those remaining of the original 1184 participants. This visit includes another PSG study, in addition to seated blood pressure, ankle-arm index blood pressure, electrocardiogram, height, weight and neck girth measurements. The participants are also again interviewed regarding their medical history, quality of life and medication use.
