| Objectives
The objective of this program is to produce cancer epidemiologists with the necessary multidisciplinary background for carrying out etiologic and other types of investigations of human cancers in the coming decades. In addition to the core curriculum we will offer trainees a choice to concentrate in one of three areas which encompass the thrust of cancer epidemiology from etiology to prevention and cancer control: Cancer etiology and prevention; genetic epidemiology of cancer; and cancer control. We hope to provide our trainees with a strong foundation which, over the years, will permit them to reorient themselves in new directions and utilize new approaches in their epidemiologic research as the state of the art and current knowledge may indicate. We also hope to stress the importance of new ideas and creative thinking in cancer epidemiology and the value of interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration in generating such ideas for research.
Major elements of the cancer epidemiology training program
We offer three training tracks to trainees: Cancer etiology and prevention; genetic epidemiology of cancer; and cancer control. All trainees will enroll in a core set of courses including epidemiologic and biostatistical methods, three courses covering methodologic issues in cancer epidemiology, and courses in genetic epidemiology and psychosocial aspects of cancer. Epidemiologic methods courses include the introductory epidemiology course followed by courses in epidemiologic methods, case control and cohort designs.
Additional recommended/optional courses will depend on the chosen training track. Following the didactic program, all trainees will conduct research in an area relevant to their chosen area of interest in cancer epidemiology. The following elements will be emphasized in the training program.

Admission
Well-qualified predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees are selected each year to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees, or undertake postdoctoral training under the preceptorship of an epidemiology faculty member. Qualified candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree and have coursework in biology and mathematics. According to the area of concentration, additional coursework may be required. For example, students interested in infectious disease epidemiology should have a strong background in microbiology while human genetics applicants should have coursework in molecular or cell biology. Admission to the post-doctoral program is generally reserved for individuals with significant experience in epidemiology, medicine or related health fields.
