Healthy Farm Bill Initiative

CLF was active in both public health and policy communities in promoting a healthy U.S. Farm Bill in 2008. Among other activities, staff:

  • Moderated phone calls for an informal coalition focused on public health and the Farm Bill with particular focus on local foods
  • Shared science-based information with numerous legislative offices
  • Spoke at a Capitol Hill briefing
  • Provided education on the Farm Bill within the Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Co-wrote an op-ed

To help explain the Farm Bill’s complex and substantial effects on an array of public health concerns from nutrition to food security to environmental health, CLF developed a two-page overview titled, “What does the Farm Bill Have to Do with Public Health?”

Already looking toward the 2012 Farm Bill, CLF is working with others to spread recognition of the Farm Bill’s powerful and multi-layered impacts on health, and to build interest and commitment to change within the public health community.
