Eating for the FutureMeatless Monday In collaboration with the National Meatless Monday Campaign, CLF provides scientific expertise to the national campaign that seeks to reduce the amount of saturated fat consumed by Americans. In 2000, the Surgeon General released the “Healthy People 2010” report outlining health objectives for the nation to serve as goals for the next decade. Healthy People 2010 calls for a 15% reduction in saturated fat in the American diet, saturated fat in the diet is almost exclusively of animal origin, and one day per week is just under 15%. By adopting Meatless Monday individuals can improve their health and potentially reduce demand for meat products, particularly industrially-produced meat, which use huge amounts of natural resources and pose significant public health and environmental risks. The Johns Hopkins Hospital Launches Meatless Monday -- Wellness Corner in Main Cafeteria to Highlight More Vegetarian Meals In April of 2010, The Johns Hopkins Hospital launched its own Meatless Monday campaign at its main cafeteria, emphasizing the health benefits of eating more vegetables and fruits. Every Monday the hospital’s renovated Cobblestone Café now offers only vegetarian meal options at its Wellness Corner to promote the benefits of eating more grains, fruits and vegetables. Meals containing meat will still be available in other areas of the cafeteria. During the campaign launch dietitians were available to answer cafeteria customers’ questions about the Meatless Monday campaign. They also helped customers choose the healthiest meat-free meal choices. |
