 2003 INDIVIDUAL AWARD: GARY R. GRANT Presented at a special CLF colloquium-- November 24, 2003 "Organizing for Justice: Working for a Livable Future" The Individual Award was presented to Gary R. Grant in recognition of his pioneering leadership as the founder of both the Concerned Citizens of Tillery and the Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association, his clear vision of environmental justice, his tireless efforts to focus attention on the impacts of industrial agriculture on communities and the environment, and his dedication to seeking sustainable, equitable and environmentally sound solutions for rural communities.

2001 ORGANIZATIONAL AWARD: DELMARVA POULTRY JUSTICE ALLIANCE Presented at a special CLF colloquium -- April 10, 2002 "Chicken Production and the Health of Workers, Farmers the Environment and Communities" The Organization Award was presented to the Delmarva Poultry Justice Alliance in recognition of work done to focus attention on the enormous impacts of industrial chicken farming on the health of workers, farmers, the environment and communities, and to mobilize action by uniting diverse groups to promote positive change. 
1999 INDIVIDUAL AWARD: DENNIS R. KEENEY Presented at the CLF 2nd Annual Edward and Nancy Dodge Lecture – March 27, 2000
The Individual Award was presented to Dennis R. Keeney, PhD, Emeritus Director of the Aldo Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in recognition of his pioneering leadership as the first director of the Aldo Leopold Center, and his foresight in linking agricultural sustainability, rural community development, and water quality.

1998 ORGANIZATIONAL AWARD: THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION Presented at the time of the second annual colloquium – November 13, 1998 "Health of the Bay–Health of the People" The Organization Award for Leadership in Environmental Stewardship was presented to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation of Annapolis, Maryland in recognition of the work of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to focus attention on the enormous human impacts on the delicate Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and to mobilize action to prevent further degradation and promote positive change.


1998 INDIVIDUAL AWARD: GRACE S. BRUSH Presented at the time of the second annual colloquium – November 13, 1998 "Health of the Bay–Health of the People" The Individual Award for Leadership in Environmental Stewardship was presented to Grace S. Brush, Professor of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, In recognition of her paleoecologic documentation of the impact of human settlement on the Chesapeake Bay and the guidance her work provides for sustainable land use policies. 

1997 ORGANIZATIONAL AWARD: UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS Presented at the time of the colloquium – November 3-5, 1997 "Equity, Health, and the World’s Resources: Food Security and Social Justice" The first Organizational Award for Leadership in Environmental Stewardship was presented to Henry W. Kendall, Ph.D., Chairman of the Union of Concerned Scientists in recognition of the work of the Union of Concerned Scientists to alert the world to the urgency of the question, "Are human beings and the natural world on a collision course?" and to direct our attention to the need for action to prevent this collision. Henry W. Kendall passed away on February 15, 1999. 

1997 INDIVIDUAL AWARD: HENRY SPIRA Presented at the time of the colloquium – November 3-5, 1997 "Equity, Health, and the World’s Resources: Food Security and Social Justice" The first Individual Award for Leadership in Environmental Stewardship was presented in Henry Spira in recognition of his tireless efforts for the ethical treatment of animals, and his foresight in recognizing the link between environmental concerns and animal mistreatment on factory farms. Henry Spira passed away on September 12, 1998.
