Earth Week Activities on JHU Campuses A number of activities are planned throughout Johns Hopkins campuses in celebration of Earth Week, beginning April 22. Here is a listing of some of the planned activities: Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day) Single-stream recycling program begins. Green single-stream recycling bins will be in place throughout the building. More information is available at the JHSPH Environmental Stewardship Committee website. Check out this YouTube video on the single-stream recycling process. 8:30 am–5:00 pm: Main Lobby: Climate Change Facts presentation will play on the “Wall of Wonder.” 11:00 am–1:00 pm: Main Lobby, Gallery: Members of JHSPH’s Environmental Stewardship Committee will distribute Earth Day materials, including information about the School’s new single- stream recycling program, games, giveaways and other earth-friendly resources. 12:00 pm–1:00 pm: Lunchtime brown-out: Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to turn off lights, computers and monitors, eat lunch in natural light or take a walk outside as a small step toward reducing their carbon footprint. Saturday April 26 As part of SOURCE’s Tri-School Day of Service, sponsored by the Student Outreach Resource Center of the Johns Hopkins University and the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health, three Earth Day-related events will take place in the East Baltimore area. 10:30 am–2:30 pm: The Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition, an East Baltimore community group, will be landscaping a community garden. Tasks include painting, planting and garden maintenance. Sponsored by SOURCE, the Student Outreach Resource Center of the Johns Hopkins University, and the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. 10:00 am–2:00 pm: Parks and People. Join this environmental organization's Global Youth Service Day efforts and work with Frank Square Elementary students and their families as they mulch, plant and weed around the school. A vegetable garden will also be created for a future educational project on healthy eating. Sponsored by SOURCE. 10:00 am–2:00 pm: Help a neighbor, Rayner Browne Elementary School, by assisting with their community garden, and helping with grounds and other maintenance work. Wednesday April 23 LIFE (Leadership Initiative For the Environment), the School of Medicine’s student environmental group, will host the 2nd annual Earth Day Event in the Turner Concourse. For a chance to win one of five iPod shuffles, bring a reusable cup, printer cartridges, old cell phones, computer parts/monitors, electronic equipment or batteries. 4:15–4:45 pm: Raffle tickets available for early arrival 4:30–5:00 pm: Speaker Mike Tidwell, Director Chesapeake Climate Action Coalition 5:00–5:30 pm: JHMI and Baltimore City Recycling Q&A in Tilghman Auditorium 5:00–7:00 pm: Happy Hour: prizes and booths about environmental action Johns Hopkins University Tuesday April 22 (Earth Day) All day: Dump on the Quad & Tap Water Challenge on the Upper (Keyser) Quad. Wednesday April 23 5-6:00 pm: Eco-BBQ on the Beach. SEA will host its annual Eco-BBQ with support from Dining Services. Thursday April 24 8-10:00 pm: Movie screening of Everything’s Cool in Remsen 101. 6-10:00 pm: U.S. Green Building Council Panel: The Sustainability Initiative and USGBC are hosting this panel discussion and networking event. Friday-Sunday April 25–April 27 All day: Tie-Dye at Spring Fair: SEA and the College Democrats are partnering for a tie-dye fundraising event each day during Spring Fair.
