Mark Winne Discusses Food Policy at CLF Event “We basically have two food systems in this country: for the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots,’’ noted Mark Winne, food policy author, in remarks to students, staff, and faculty in his presentation and book signing February 12. Winne, who has spent his entire career addressing food system issues, read passages from his new book, “Closing the Food Gap,” and discussed some of his concerns facing the nation’s food systems. “Hunger and food security are becoming a very pervasive part of American society,’ he warned. Winne spoke of the need for municipalities to make nutritious food readily available to inner-city residents. “Supermarkets have walked away from urban America,” he told the group. He also described successful programs implemented in other cities to improve residents' access to healthy food. Winne’s talk was part of the Center for a Livable Future lecture series held throughout the year at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. A complete MP3 recording of his talk is now available on the CLF web site. |
