Respiratory Viruses


Acute respiratory illness is one of the leading causes of pediatric mortality worldwide. The CIR is currently evaluating vaccine candidates for respiratory syncytial virus and human parainfluenza virus, which are two of the most important causes of viral lower respiratory tract illness in children. We are also testing candidate vaccines for the control of avian influenza strains with pandemic potential as part of the U.S. government’s Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response Plan.
