Enteric Bacterial Infections Vaccine Trials at the CIR

ETEC

The CIR has conducted clinical trials or field studies using the following vaccines against ETEC:

  • Transcutaneous LT
  • Live, oral attenuated ETEC expressing CFAs
  • Recombinant B subunit of cholera toxin, which is similar to LT, combined with five strains of formalin-killed ETEC whole cells expressing CFAs
  • Live attenuated Vibrio cholerae vectoring CFA/I
  • Orally delivered bovine milk immunoglobulin specific for CFA/I and the minor CFA/I fimbrial adhesion, CfaE
  • Orally delivered bovine milk immunoglobulin specific for CS17 fimbriae and CS17 minor fimbrial adhesion CsbD

Shigella

The CIR has conducted clinical trials using the following vaccine candidates against Shigella:

  • S. flexneri, 2a LPS proteosome vaccine
  • S. flexneri 2a Invaplex 50 vaccine
  • WRSd1 live attenuated S. dysenteriae type I vaccine
  • S. sonnei inactivated whole cell vaccine
