November 4, 2003: Improving Birth Outcomes and Reducing Birth Defects in Developing Countries: Two reports are now available from the Institute of Medicine's Board on Global Health. Dr. Laura Caulfield, CHN faculty member and academic program coordinator, is a member of the Board on Global Health and has studied the role of nutrition in improving birth outcomes in several regions of the globe, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

May 2003: The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Food Sciences and Nutrition is available from the Academic Press. Benjamin Caballero (CHN Director) was editor-in-chief for this expanded, revised, and updated version of the encyclopedia which was first published in 1993.

September 6, 2002: The Institute of Medicine released new Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Fat, Protein and Amino Acids (Macronutrients) which replace the old Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs). Benjamin Caballero, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition, has served on the Food and Nutrition Board since 1997 and was one of 21 scientists on the macronutrient panel who contributed to this new volume.
September 2002: The Nutrition Transition: Diet and Disease in the Developing World, edited by Benjamin Caballero, MD, PhD and Barry M. Popkin, PhD. Rapid socio-economic shifts have led to an ever increasing rate of change of dietary, activity, and body composition patterns around the world. This book provides recent information on population trends, changes in food production, and epidemiological data on diet-related chronic diseases in the developing world. Leading international experts in the fields of nutrition, food science, economics, demography, international health, and public health contributed to this project.

March 2002: Dietary Risk Assessment in the WIC Program, published by the National Academies Institute of Medicine is a report issued by a scientific committee that includes CHN’s Dr. Laura Caulfield. It presents the scientific bases for the framework for assessing dietary risk in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program.
