Introduction to the Program

The Walter Reed Johns Hopkins Cameroon Program (WRJHCP) comprises a field office and laboratory for the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (USMHRP) and the departments of International Health and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD. Established in 1998, the program is based in Yaounde, Cameroon, in west Central Africa. WRJHCP currently maintains five permanent throughout the forested south of Cameroon, and has continuing collaborations with two industrial plantations and two military garrisons in the country.

The program’s mission is to address public health needs through basic research on the ecology of disease emergence, applied research in vaccine development, tailored programs of community education and health intervention, and training of future health researchers and practitioners. This mission grows from our understanding that preventing disease and maintaining health requires equal dedication to public health research, practice and training.

The Walter Reed Johns Hopkins Cameroon Program (WRJHCP) has four corresponding objectives:

  • to contribute to our understanding of the interaction between ecology and health
  • to aid in the development and evaluation of vaccines against HIV and childhood diseases
  • to promote public health and reduce disease in Central Africa populations
  • to provide formative training experiences in public health research and practice
