Post-baccalaureate Fellowship Program
for American Indian Scholars (Post-bac Scholars)

The goal of the Post-baccalaureate Program for American Indian Scholars (Post-bac Scholars) is to provide experience that will increase the likelihood of success in applying to and competing in a research-based graduate program.

The core experience that the Post-bac Scholar will receive is to be assigned as a research assistant in one of the Center’s existing programs (infectious disease or behavioral health related research studies).  The student will receive a specific role within the research project and will meet weekly with their faculty mentor to assess progress.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to enroll in graduate level courses at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and will also receive ancillary trainings in a variety of professional development skills based on their interests.

This Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health provides a wide range of educational benefits, work-life programs, counseling, and cultural activities to all employees. In addition, Post-bac Scholars will be receiving the following support:

1. Interviews conducted between the Post-bac Scholar and mentor will identify areas that can be strengthened by participation in departmental seminars, journal clubs, and similar activities, so that expectations are clear for both parties.

2. Specific course work will be recommended as appropriate. Tuition funds in addition to the support available to any Hopkins employee will be provided as appropriate.

3. Where performance on standardized tests is an issue, support for graduate test (GRE, MCAT, etc) preparation courses.

4. Semi-Annually, a half-day seminar will be held for the participants to present their work to each other and their mentors. This is an important component of ongoing evaluation of the Scholars.

5. A course in Responsible Conduct of Research will be completed by each scholar. In addition, all Scholars will be asked to sign the honor code, emphasizing scientific and academic integrity, which was developed by the Graduate Student Association and the Dean of Student Affairs.
