2008 Summer Institute Registration/Scholarship Form

The Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health will conduct two, one-week Summer Institute courses. The Institute is designed for tribal health leaders and related health care professionals and paraprofessionals who have not necessarily had formal training in public health, but may be working to determine tribal priorities for health care, or who are working/interested in clinical research or public health within tribal communities.

Tuition rate: ($770 per credit, $500 per credit for non-credit)

Introduction to Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods 
July 7-11, 2008 (9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)  221.671 (2 credits)

The overarching goal of the course is to provide a basic overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods and the different applications of each to a variety of different public health interventions.  Readings, lectures and labs explore different research methods and the process of selecting the appropriate method to design and implement a variety of public health interventions.  Topics covered in the course include:  focus groups, in-depth interviews, ethnographic field guides, comparison designs, intervention designs, and randomized controlled trials.  Students will work to gain a basic understanding of these research methods and apply them to existing projects on which they are working. 

Introduction to Data Management Using American Indian Health Data

The Introduction to Data Management using American Indian Health Data course is an introductory level course intended for students with a very basic understanding of biostatistical concepts used in public health sciences.  The focus of the course is on teaching basic data management skills and processes, including:  participant tracking, management of personnel, software selection, development of data forms and data entry screens, data security, data cleaning and verification, development of data dictionary, and the development of policies and procedures manual for data management system.  Students will work with American Indian Health data sets to apply skills learned throughout the course.  In addition to quantitative data management, the course reviews the basics of qualitative data collection, coding and processing.  Student evaluation is based on class participation, short assignments, and daily quizzes.

Coursework may be applied towards a Public Health Training Certificate in American Indian Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health or a master's degree in public health, if the student is accepted to these programs. *For more information, contact Olivia Sloan by email at osloan@jhsph.edu or Cathie Frazier by email at cfrazier@jhsph.edu or by telephone, 410-955-6931.

*Limited scholarships are available for Native American students that cover tuition, travel and lodging for ONE course.  Deadline to submit scholarship application is May 1, 2008 at 5 pm (EST).
