On October 27, 2011, White Mountain Apache staff Novalene Goklish and Francene Larzelere-Hinton, accompanied Dr. John Walkup to the American Psychiatry Association's annual award ceremony to receive a bronze award for their work on the Celebrating Life project. The White Mountain Apache Suicide Surveillance and Prevention System's unique and innovative approach to suicide includes four components: 1) mandated reporting; 2) in person follow-up; 3) risk assessment and intervention development; and 4) Apache community mental health specialists. A description of the award-winning program is presented in the November 2011 issue of Psychiatric Services, a journal of the American Psychiatric Association. |
