Family Services - Current Projects

Cradling Our Future Through Family Strengthening
Cradling our Future is a research study designed to determine whether American Indian teenage mothers and their babies benefit from the home-based program Family Spirit.  The study is a 5-year grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and is taking place in Fort Defiance, Tuba City, Whiteriver, and San Carlos.

First Things First Projects
First Things First was created in 2006 when Arizona voters passed Proposition 203, resulting in tobacco tax funds being directed towards early childhood programming. First Things First was established to help provide greater opportunities for all children five and under in Arizona to grow up ready to succeed. First Things First is currently funding two Johns Hopkins projects in Whiteriver, Arizona: a Fathers Project to develop a pilot intervention for fathers with young children, and a Support Box distribution project for working families.

Together on Diabetes
In January, 2012, JHCAIH began a partnership with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) Foundation's "Together on Diabetes" initiative to participate in a 2-year pilot project that will address the increasing burden of type 2 diabetes on youth and their families in four tribal communities.  The project will work intensively with the following communities:  White Mountain Apache Nation and three communites on Navajo Nation: Chinle AZ, Tuba City AZ and Shiprock, NM.
