Treatments and Interventions

Evaluation of existing and emerging treatment approaches for autism spectrum disorders is an extremely important research area.  This is not the main focus of CADDE activities, however, which conducts research to better describe the distribution of autism in the population and uncover potential risk factors for autism.

If you are interested in general information about autism interventions and treatment, we can suggest the following resources:

Educational Interventions

Lord C, McGee JP (eds).  Educating Children with Autism.  Committee on Educational Interventions for Children with Autism, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, National Research Council, 2001.

From the Publisher:  Educating Children with Autism outlines an interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. The committee explores what makes education effective for the child with autism and identifies specific characteristics of programs that work. Recommendations are offered for choosing educational content and strategies, introducing interaction with other children, and other key areas.

Other Information on Treatments and Interventions

If you are interested in contacting a parent-founded organization that focuses on advocating for research with practical applications for those living with autism today, we suggest you contact the Organization for Autism Research.

Also, the National Institutes of Health's Autism Coordinating Committee (ACC) has funded several new research centers especially emphasizing treatment research as well as basic science.  Look for news about these Centers on the ACC web page.

Clinical Evaluations

Finally, if you are interested in a consultation/evaluation for your child by a multidisciplinary clinical team at Johns Hopkins, we suggest you contact the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.  An initial evaluation can be requested by calling 888-554-2080 or by completing the forms available for download at CARD’s website.
