Hazardous Air Pollutants and Autism Risk

Cases of autism in Maryland, identified through surveillance are being compared to controls identified through a random sampling of birth certificates, with regard to area level estimates of ambient air pollution at the time of birth.  Air pollution estimates come from the National Air Toxics Assessment of the U.S. EPA.  The purpose of this study is to determine whether children with autism are born to mothers living in areas with greater exposure to certain pollutants during pregnancy.  It may help to indicate pollutants of concern and provide focus for future investigations of environmental risk factors for autism.
