Autism spectrum disorder screening and management practices among general pediatric providers. Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, 2006.
This article examines Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) screening practices among general pediatricians. The majority of pediatricians surveyed routinely screen their patients for developmental delays. However, few of them (8%) screen regularly for autism and ASD. Almost half of those who did not screen routinely said they preferred to send the child to a clinical specialist and nearly one-third cited lack of time as a major reason for not screening. Of those who screen regularly for ASD, 90% reported they are prompted to do so by parental concern and/or suspicion of ASD during routine examination. |
