Coming up! 9th Annual Dodge Lecture featuring environmental activist Vandana Shiva
World renowned author, researcher and ecological activist Vandana Shiva, of New Delhi, India, will visit the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health on March 3, 2009 to discuss her work to promote sustainability, diversity, and fair trade in the food system.  Shiva’s lecture, entitled “Agriculture, Environment, and Health,” will begin at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a reception.....Read More......

Seventh Year of Fellowship Program Anounced
The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) announces the seventh year of its Predoctoral Fellowship Program. Each predoctoral fellowship provides one year of support in an amount up to $60,000 to be used for tuition, stipend, and/or research expenses depending on individual needs.....Read More.....

Study: Flies may spread drug-resistant bacteria from poultry operations  
A new study by Johns Hopkins University researchers and funded by CLF has found yet another pathway between industrial food animal production and exposures to antibiotic resistant pathogens. Previous studies have linked antibiotic use in poultry production to antibiotic resistant bacteria in farm workers, consumer poultry products and the environment surrounding confined poultry operations, as well as releases from poultry transport.....Read More.....  

“Hope for a Heated Planet”: Special Lecture by Robert Musil, PhD, MPH
Dr. Robert Musil, a Johns Hopkins School of Public Health alum and former executive director of Physicians for Social Responsibility, co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for is work to eliminate nuclear weapons, returns to the school on February 17 to discuss his new book, “Hope for a Heated Planet: How Americans are Fighting Global Warming and Building a Better Future.” Dr. Musil will discuss efforts to reduce the effects of climate change and get more Americans interested in the growing environmental movement by offering insight and hopeful solutions.  The lecture will take place from 12 pm to 1:15 pm in W3031, 615 N. Wolfe St., to be followed by a book signing.......Read More.....

Imagine magazine, a publication of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, published an article written by CLF Research and Policy Director Roni Neff, Ph.D. in its January/February 2009 issue. In her article, “Food Matters: How What We Eat Affects Our Health and the Planet,” Neff discusses the true costs of our food and the need to incorporate public health concerns into agriculture policies......Read More.....
