Epidemiology Student Organization

Mission Statement

The Epidemiology Student Organization (ESO) is comprised of all master, doctoral, and post-doctoral students in the Department of Epidemiology.  As an independent student organization, the mission of ESO is to promote the academic and professional development of epidemiology students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Our goal is to create an environment that facilitates discussion, education, and cooperation by working with faculty, administration, and other student groups.

Organization Highlights

Established in 1982, the ESO serves students of the nation's first department of Epidemiology.  The ESO has organized student-initiated symposiums on bioterrorism, taught epidemiology to Baltimore high school students, and hosted seminars and lunches with leaders in the field of epidemiology.

Students also relax and socialize at events such as wine and cheese parties, outings to local plays and movies, ice skating at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and the annual departmental flag football game.

The ESO maintains a room for student usage (W6309).  This room contains both a meeting area as well as five computers, a printer and two scanners.  Students have access to a collection of recent journals including AJE, Epidemiology, NEJM, and AJPH.  The student room also houses a library of reference books including, but not limited to, titles such as Modern Epidemiology, Applied Survival Analysis and A Dictionary of Epidemiology.
