| During his presidential campaign, President Barack Obama frequently asserted that water is one of the critical challenges facing the twenty-first century.Since taking office he has highlighted several aspects of this pressing issue, including universal access to clean water, the increasingly complex politics of water, and the crumbling water infrastructure which poses threats in even the most economically developed nations. None of this is news to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Abel Wolman, who, in 1919, pioneered the chlorine disinfection process for public water supplies, joined the School's faculty in 1936, and researchers at the School continue to be actively engaged in water science. To echo President Obama's call to action and to publicize the challenges of water-related public health issues, the Bloomberg School hosted a symposium devoted to the topic on Friday, November 13, at the New York Academy of Sciences in lower Manhattan.
