    • Distinguished Women in Environmental Health Sciences Alumni Panel Time: 12:00p - 5:30p Location: Becton Dickinson Hall (W1020) Details:

      Please join us on Friday, April 11, 2014 as the Polly Walker Ecology Fund and the Department of

      Environmental Health Sciences Grand Rounds host an afternoon symposium to celebrate Distinguished Women in Environmental Health Sciences.

      The symposium will begin at 12 noon, with Robert Musil PhD, MPH ‘01 as the EHS Grand Rounds Speaker. Bob will discuss the research leading to his new book on great women leaders in Environmental Health, including Rachel Carson, Anna Baetjer, Harriet Hardy, and others, entitled “Rachel Carson and Her Sisters: Extraordinary Women Who Have Shaped America’s Environment” (Rutgers University Press, 2014).

      Robert K. Musil, PhD, MPH ‘01 is Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, School of Public Affairs, American University, where he teaches about climate change, American environmental politics and in the Nuclear Studies Institute.  He also has been a Visiting Scholar at the Churches’ Center for Theology and Public Policy, Wesley Theological Seminary, where he taught about religious responses to global warming and security threats.

      From 2-4PM we will feature contemporary female American environmental leaders, who are alumni of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. They will discuss their current work, reflect on their training and the influence of the women scientists, writers, and environment and human health advocates who inspired their interest in exploring the links between environmental pollution and human health. Speakers will be announced shortly.

      The afternoon will conclude with a Wine and Cheese Reception in the Gallery. We hope to see you the afternoon of Friday, April 11th, 2014! Please join us for as much of the day as you can. RSVP by clicking here.

      The local JHU alumni chapter will be co-sponsoring this event with the Osler Medical Society. Paul Walker, MD, PhD from the Brody School of Medicine will be discussing physician burnout.

      Paul Walker Bio:
      Paul R. Walker, MD, FACP graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1979. Dr. Walker is a board certified internist and medical oncologist who directs the Thoracic Oncology and Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Programs at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Dr. Walker readily admits he is a ‘Burnout-aholic’ physician.

      Join fellow alumni and guests for this year’s Annual Faculty Speaker Series!

      Dr. David Lampton is Hyman Professor and Director of China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he also heads SAIS China, the school’s overall presence in greater China.

      Alumni and guests will enjoy a discussion led by Dr. Lampton and will have an opportunity for a book signing as well.

      Dr. Lampton will discuss his new University of California Press book entitled, Following the Leader: Ruling China, from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping. Based on a large number of interviews with Chinese leaders over the last forty-plus years, Dr. Lampton will discuss changes and continuities in Chinese leadership views of governing China and dealing with the world.

      Among the topics that will be addressed are:

      • What keeps Chinese leaders awake at night?
      • Negotiating with the Chinese
      • Civil-military relations
      • Policy making in the People's Republic
