Women's Health and Aging Study I (WHAS I)
This study is a prospective, observational study of 1,002 women aged 65 years and older representing the one-third most disabled older women living in the community. The goal is to determine the causes and course of physical disability so as to inform subsequent interventions to prevent progression to severest disability, and ameliorate disability.

Women's Health and Aging Study II (WHAS II)
This study is a prospective, observational study of the natural history of, and risk factors for, the onset of physical disability in older women. Four hundred thirty-six women initially aged 70-79 representing the 2/3's least disabled women living in a community were enrolled in the study. These participants have been followed since 1994.

Women's Health and Aging Study III (WHAS III)
This study performs secondary data analyses, along with selected measurements of banked blood, from the Women's Health and Aging Study I (WHAS I), merged with data from WHAS II and an ancillary study which obtained and processed blood measures for participants in both studies.

Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS)
The Cardiovascular Health Study is a population-based longitudinal study of the causes and consequences of coronary heart disease and stroke in adults aged 65 years and older. 6000 men and women were recruited from four communities nationwide, and have been evaluated longitudinally since 1989-90. The main objective of the study is to identify factors related to the onset and onset of coronary heart disease and stroke.

Cognitive Pathways to Disability
This study complements the Women's Health and Aging Study II to understand how age-related changes in various domains of cognition may exert downstream effects on physical function and the implementation of compensatory strategies.

Experience Corps Baltimore (EC)
This is a new model of senior service designed to have high impact on improving the educational outcomes of children in elementary schools in Baltimore, as well as the health and functional status of older adults. In partnership with the city of Baltimore and the Baltimore City Public School System, The Center on Aging and Health (COAH) and other Johns Hopkins scientists and the Greater Homewood Community Corporation are expanding the Experience Corps program throughout the city of Baltimore. A randomized controlled trial of the impact of the program on academic outcomes of children and the health of older volunteers is being initiated with support from the National Institute on Aging.

Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory Study (GEM)
The Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study is a randomized, controlled trial of the effect of ginkgo biloba in preventing cognitive decline, memory loss and dementia.

Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC)
The focus of the Older Americans Independence Center at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions is to promote independence for frail older adults through the development of interventions to prevent or ameliorate frailty and the many serious, adverse outcomes that frail older adults are at risk for.
