The Departments of Health Policy and Management, Epidemiology, Mental Health, and Population, Family and Reproductive Health jointly administer an Interdepartmental Program in Gerontology. The program is based on the public health approach to the aging population and covers

  • psychosocial and biological aspects of gerontology
  • the epidemiology of older populations
  • the availability, organization, and financing of existing services for older individuals
  • the development of policies and financing strategies to improve availability and delivery of these services
  • the development of new and needed services
  • the design of research specific to the older population and the methods to carry it out

Graduates are prepared to assume leadership positions in a broad array of agencies and institutions currently charged with the responsibility of understanding the older population and with administering programs for this population.

Doctoral candidates apply for admission to the department of interest in the School of Public Health and simultaneously to the Interdepartmental Program in Gerontology.  All students will fulfill doctoral requirements within the department to which they are admitted, including coursework, departmental and school-wide examinations and dissertation. In addition, a set of courses with gerontological content will be required.

Post-doctoral candidates must apply to the Interdepartmental Program in Gerontology upon acceptance into a post-doctoral program. If the post-doctoral program is a degree program requiring a research project and/or paper, the area of study should have relevance for gerontologic issues and be supervised by an appropriate mentor.
