The concentration in the epidemiology of aging is appropriate for Masters and Doctoral students in Epidemiology who wish to concentrate on diseases or processes that affect health and functioning in older adults. Training will also emphasize statistical, methodological, and theoretical issues related to the study of older populations. Students develop practical skills on how to study older populations from an epidemiologic perspective.
This area of concentration has a foundation in epidemiology and biostatistics and also includes specialized course work in aging from several departments around the school. Chronic disease is emphasized, but students who wish to study infectious diseases are also welcome. Because gerontology (the science of aging) is exceptionally broad and interdisciplinary, students should work closely with their advisors to accommodate specific research and career interests. Second-year students are required to develop a research project related to the study of aging. That project normally will involve collaboration on an epidemiologic study of older populations that is ongoing at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Students are also strongly encouraged to attend the following activities: - The Invited Seminar Series in Aging Research, The Center on Aging and Health (Mondays, 3:30-5:00)
Epidemiology and Biostatistics of Aging Research in Progress, Center on Aging and Health (Wednesdays, 12:15-1:30) - The Welch Center Journal club, Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research (Tuesdays, 12:15-1:00)
- Welch Center Grand Rounds (Wednesday, 12:15-1:15)
- Biostatistics Grand Rounds (time to be announced)
- Clinical, Social and Scientific Foundations of Geriatric Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Bayview Campus (Tuesdays, 11:30-2)
