Youth Advisory Committee

The Center relies on input from young community members to ensure that they have a voice in guiding our efforts. With members between the ages of 13 and 21, the Youth Advisory Committee—or YAC—is an equal decision-making partner that meets twice a month at the Center to discuss current issues and projects. To learn more about YAC activities and how to become a member, contact Seante Hatcher at 443-287-3006 or shatcher@jhsph.edu.

Love Through the Eyes of Baltimore Youth: A Photovoice Exhibit

When asked what theme they would like to focus on for a Photovoice project, the YAC said LOVE! Tired of being identified with the problems facing their communities, the youth were given cameras to take pictures of the love they saw around them.

As a community-based participatory research methodology, Photovoice offers youth the opportunity to document their own lives, through their eyes. The youth worked for a year in collaboration with Andre Chung, photojournalist with the Baltimore Sun paper and Dr. Roberta Downing, a W.K. Kellogg Community Health Scholar at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as with Nedra Ross and Layne Humphrey at the Center for Adolescent Health.

The first exhibit—held at the Bloomberg School on October 4th, 2006—was a resounding success! Visitors included JHSPH faculty and students, CAB members, YAC family members, and Jamal Moses, ED, of the Mayor’s office of Children, Youth and Families. More exhibits are being planned, including one at Baltimore's City Hall. Our Activities page will feature dates and times as soon as they become available. Check back often!
