The certificate program provides a framework for understanding vaccine science and policy, from clinical research to implementation, in both the United States and internationally.
After successfully completing this certificate, you will be prepared to:
- Understand the detailed process of developing, preparing, evaluating and using vaccines;
- Identify, analyze, and critique cutting-edge strategies for approaching vaccine development;
- Identify and describe the scientific and policy obstacles preventing development of effective vaccines for several important human pathogens;
- Understand current national and international policy issues in vaccine research, development, manufacturing, supply and utilization;
- Understand global finance policies and strategies for funding vaccine research and development, for purchasing vaccines, and for the implementation and evaluation of vaccine delivery programs and campaigns;
- Communicate with the key stakeholders and institutions involved in formulating vaccine policy in the United States and globally;
- Explain policy and regulatory requirements and their application in clinical vaccine trials to assure quality and protection of human subjects;
- Explain the Good Clinical Practice standards for the design, conduct, performance, monitoring, auditing, recording, analyses, and reporting of clinical vaccine trials.

This certificate is open to all students currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The certificate program in Vaccine Science and Policy is relevant to students of all academic backgrounds with an interest in vaccine development, evaluation, and policy.
- Admissions Criteria

The certificate is open to all students currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Post-docs are also permitted to enroll in the certificate. Interested students should email the following information to Amber Cox (acox@jhsph.edu) when registering for the first vaccine seminar:

The certificate program requires the following courses:
Vaccine Seminar (2 terms)
- 223.867 Special Topics in Vaccine Science (1 credit per term) (2nd and 3rd terms on-campus)
Core Vaccine Courses (select at least three of the four core courses)

Requirements for Successful Completion
- * At least 18 credits of certificate coursework that includes 2 credits of vaccine seminar (223.867), 3 core certificate courses, and elective certificate courses
- * At least a grade of B in the core courses; core courses must be taken for a letter grade
- * At least a grade of C or pass in the other courses
- * An overall GPA of 2.75 or better for the certificate courses
