Educational Objectives
The certificate program educates and trains students to identify major environmental health issues facing public health professionals today. Courses explore the sources of environmental agents, their distribution in community and work environments, transfer routes to humans and possible health effects; the basic biological mechanisms underlying the association between prior exposure and subsequent development of adverse health effects; and control strategies and interventions.

Gainful Employment Program Information

Intended Audience

The program is intended for public health professionals currently practicing in environmental/occupational health or other areas of public health who seek formal training, current degree candidates in the School outside of EHS, and non-degree candidates who wish to begin formal training in environmental health. A selection of online courses is available for students who wish to pursue the certificate via the Internet.

Admissions Criteria

The program is open to any student who is a JHU degree candidate outside of the Department of EHS. Non-JHU degree candidates students must formally apply to this certificate program as a Special Student Regular (SSR).

For JHU degree candidates outside of EHS: These students wishing to pursue the Certificate should contact the Department’s Academic Programs Manager to inform the Department of their intent to pursue the certificate so that arrangements can be made to meet with the certificate program director to discuss course options. This notice must be submitted via email as soon as possible, but before the term in which the final course will be taken.

Non-JHU degree candidates: Those who are not currently in a JHU degree program must formally apply to this program as a Special Student Regular (SSR) in EHS by using the following link: Admissions

Course of Study

A minimum of 18 credits must be earned in the courses listed below. All students are required to complete three of the following four courses:
  • 180.601 Environmental Health ** (5 units)3rd term or Summer Institute
OR
  • 180.609 Principles of Environmental Health I (4 units) 1st term
  • 182.625 Principles of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene ** (4 units) 2nd term or 4th term
  • 187.610 Public Health Toxicology ** (4 units) 1st term or 2nd term
  • 188.680 Fundamentals of Occupational Health**+(3 units)1st term
    • Additional courses (total units for certificate must equal at least 18):

** Offered online only - Please note that the School requires all students to establish an eLearning account and to complete the free Introduction to Online Learning course prior to the start of the term in which the first internet course is taken.

Requirements for Successful Completion

• A total of 18 units must be successfully completed based on the course curriculum

• All required courses must be taken for a letter grade; exceptions apply to required courses that are only offered pass/fail

• At least a “B” in each required course (or Pass if required courses is offered only pass/fail)

• At least a “C” or Pass in the elective courses; elective courses may be taken for a letter grade or pass/fail

• A minimum overall GPA of 3.00 for the certificate courses

• All certificate coursework must be completed within three years of commencing the first certificate course
