Training Certificate in Quantitative Methods in Public Health

Educational Objectives
The certificate recipient will be able to – 1) evaluate the methods used to measure health effects in populations, 2) interpret basic, quantitative public health measures, 3) judge policy implications of public health data and research, 4) be familiar with the difficulties of collecting, interpreting and analyzing data and their implications, and 5) perform a critical review of public health/epidemiologic literature.

Intended Audience

Members of the public health workforce and other professionals who seek training and education in basic quantitative methods for analyzing and using public health data. Matriculated degree candidates are not eligible for this certificate. This program is intended to be taken on a part-time basis. Most courses are available in the institutes or via the internet.

Admissions Criteria

Bachelor's degree with at least one college level biology or equivalent course, one college-level math or statistics course, and a strong record of successful academic performance.

No more than 8 credits may be accrued before submission of an application to the certificate program, complete with all supporting documents.
Matriculated students must begin the program within one year of admission unless granted a deferment.

  • 140.611 Statistical Reasoning in Public Health I (3 credits)
  • 140.612 Statistical Reasoning in Public Health II (3 credits)
  • 340.608 Observational Epidemiology (4 credits) NOTE PREREQUISITES
  • OR 140.613 Data Analysis Workshop I
  • AND 140.614 Data Analysis Workshop II (4 credits) NOTE PREREQUISITES
  • 340.663 Epidemiology Workshop: Interpreting and Using Epidemiologic Evidence (2 credits)

Requirements for Successful Completion

Successful completion of all courses with a GPA of 2.75 or above. In addition, all students must complete the online Introduction to Academic Ethics module within the first two terms of enrollment.
