Important Note for International Students: All academic transcripts from institutions outside of the U.S., must be evaluated by an external credentialing agency.

Note: If you miss an admissions deadline, you may still apply as long as you submit all of your admissions materials within one month of the admissions deadline. Also, you can get started with coursework prior to admission by taking courses as a non-degree seeking student. These credits will apply to the degree, once admitted into the program.  See the practice tests site for the GMAT.

MPH Admission Requirements:

Application - All applicants must submit the online admissions application available through the School's Admissions Office, which includes the submission of a:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Personal Statement

Application instructions are available on the admissions website. (At this time, JHSPH is not participating in SOPHAS).

Transcripts - Transcripts are required from each academic institution attended beyond high school.**(Important note for International Applicants below!)

Three letters of recommendation are required -  It is suggested that both professional and academic letters of recommendation be submitted.  Recommendation forms are provided in the online application materials.

Standardized test scores - Official scores from one of the following tests are required of all MPH applicants: GRE, MCAT, GMAT, or LSAT.

  • Applicants who do NOT clearly demonstrate strong quantitative skills are not admitted into the program.
  • Applicants may elect to have their applications reviewed without standardized test scores if they have earned an advanced degree beyond the baccalaureate. However, in doing so applicants will be putting themselves at a significant disadvantage for admission into the program unless their admission materials clearly demonstrate significant quantitative and analytical skills. This is particularly true for applicants with medical degrees earned outside of the U.S.
  • Applicants who request to have their applications reviewed without standardized test scores will likely not be awarded a scholarship.

Please note: In some geographic areas, GMAT testing centers are more accessible than those for the GRE; and the GMAT is a suitable standardized test for applicants to the MPH Program.  See the practice tests site for the GMAT.

Coursework - All applicants are required to have successfully completed at least one college-level course in each of the following areas:

  • Mathematics (e.g., calculus, algebra, statistics)
  • General biology
  • Health-related science (e.g., nutrition, microbiology, anatomy or physiology), OR another biology course

English Language Proficiency - Applicants from countries in which English is not the primary language must submit official scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum TOEFL score of 250 on the computer-based test, 600 on the paper-based, or 100 on the Internet-based test is required for admission into the MPH program. Applicants from this list of countries are required to submit TOEFL scores. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores with a minimum score of 7.0 are also acceptable.

Experience - A minimum of two years of full-time post-baccalaureate health-related work experience is required of all applicants who have not earned a doctoral degree. This requirement may be waived for applicants to the MPH combined degree programs (except for the combined MPH/MBA degree, which does require two years of health-related work experience).

Application Fee - There is a non-refundable online application fee of $45.

All hard copy materials (such as transcripts) should be mailed to the following address:

**Important Note for International Applicants regarding Academic Transcripts:

All academic transcripts from institutions outside of the U.S. must be evaluated by a U.S.-based external credentialing service. Since it takes a credentialing service several weeks to complete an evaluation, please begin this process as soon as possible. Some of the most frequently used credentialing agencies are:

AACRAO
202-293-9161 x 6660

ECE
414-289-3400

WES
212-966-6311

When contacting the credentialing service of your choice, you will need to request a course-by-course evaluation.
