Daniel Ehlman, MPH 2005

I earned my MPH from JHSPH during the 2004-2005 academic year, concentrating my coursework in Epidemiology and Biostatistics with a capstone project analyzing malaria data from Tanzania.  In addition to my studies, I was elected MPH representative to Student Assembly, where I focused on quality of life issues for JHSPH students, particularly MPH students.
 
Before JHSPH, I studied mathematics and biology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1999.  I then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Paraguay, where I trained local teachers in health and environmental education topics and implemented small-scale, community-based health projects. I also worked with Habitat for Humanity in Paraguay and Brazil in a variety of housing initiatives.
 
After graduating from JHSPH, I worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Public Health Prevention Service, a three year program management fellowship.  At CDC, I collaborated with the Ministries of Health in the Republics of Armenia and Georgia to evaluate their tuberculosis surveillance systems; planned the organizational assessment of the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention; and created and coordinated an innovative Internet-based STD/HIV partner services program to improve Washington, DC’s disease management system.  Most recently, I served as a consultant to the World Health Organization in the Philippines, where I conducted assessments of the Expanded Program on Immunization and provided technical training in disease surveillance and program implementation to health staff. 
 
With the help of the JHSPH experience and its far-flung public health network, I have been afforded many public health opportunities that have allowed me to focus on my professional goal of improving health outcomes for the most-marginalized communities through the execution of scientifically-sound and carefully planned projects.
