The Woodlawn Project started as a collaboration among the Woodlawn Mental Health Center, the Chicago public and parochial schools, and the Woodlawn Community Board. Woodlawn is a socially disadvantaged community on the south side of Chicago. In the middle 1960s, when this study began, almost all the Woodlawn residents were African American.
