Interviewer & Facilitator Staff

Miera Corey
Research Assistant III
mcorey@jhsph.edu

My main duties at the Lighthouse are interviewing clients so that we can get a better insight into Baltimore's forgotten communities. By gathering accurate data and by simply hearing what my clients have to say, I give them a voice that they may not get to express normally.

Nona B. Dunston
Research Assistant
ndunston@jhsph.edu

As an interviewer at the Lighthouse, I help to collect data that will help change the lives of others. Our clients don't just come in to do a survey, they leave knowing that there is hope for the future. My personal reward is knowing that I was one of the ones who helped to make a difference. My goal is to become a certified counselor.

Research Program Assistant III

The thing I enjoy the most about my job is the flexibility, freedom for growth, and the ability to pursue educational goals. When I tell someone where I work, they assume it's the hospital. They don't know how Hopkins has little offices at work all around the city, and the Lighthouse is not just the name of a restaurant.

My job at the Lighthouse is mainly to interview and collect valid data from the participants for the SHIELD study. During my tenure here, my duties have varied. I have screened, tracked and followed up on individuals for the study. I've collaborated with administration in the development, structure, and format of the SHIELD instrument tool, the survey. I've helped maintain the SHIP studies and the Guide to Community Resources and Services database, a resource and referral manual for our clients.

Currently, I am receiving training in HIV pre-test and post-test counseling for the new, upcoming projects, as well as receiving education and training on Web page development. This is one of many things I enjoy about my job; that is, having the opportunity to be able to explore your ideas to find your niche. Most of all, I enjoy interacting with the participants and having a feeling of filling a void or meeting their needs, even when I haven't really done anything but listen to their concerns.

Tonya Johnson
Facilitator, Research Project Assistant
tjohnson@jhsph.edu

I am a Research Project Assistant. My duties include, but are not limited to, educating participants about HIV and risk reduction behaviors, interviewing, counseling and tracking clients. It is very important to me to help my clients fully understand the projects goal and the policies and procedures of the study. I stress the importance of knowing the risks and benefits of participating and the role of the study to protect the confidentiality of the client. Giving a little of myself helps to form a trusting bond between myself and participants. I believe that working on the study is good for me because it allows me the opportunity to become involved and learn about my community.
