The INSPIRE Project

The INSPIRE (Intervention for Seropositive IDUs Research and Intervention) Project is a multi-site study funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that is taking place in Miami, San Francisco, New York, and Baltimore.

It was designed to increase the access and use of primary medical care among injection drug users who are living with HIV.  Participants were trained to become peer mentors in the community.

The overall purpose of INSPIRE is to assess the usefulness of an intervention for people with HIV/AIDS who inject drugs.  The primary goals of the intervention are:

  • To prevent HIV transmission due to high risk sexual and drug injection behaviors
  • To increase access to, use of, and maintenance in primary health care
  • To increase access to, use of, and adherence to HIV treatments among injection drug users

The intervention will be 10 sessions, 8 of which will be groups and 2 of which will individual counseling.

The Lighthouse Studies at Peer Point, a member of the Johns Hopkins family, supports an atmosphere free of discrimination on the basis of gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or legally protected characteristic.
