Funding Proposal Preparation

This page summarizes the general steps necessary to process a funding proposal through the School. Links to resources that may assist you through the process are also provided. The time frame for receiving funding will vary from a few months up to a year, depending on the specific opportunity. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead and allow ample preparation time for your funding application. Establish a timeline that gives you plenty of time, especially for steps that involve others. This page can be printed for use as a checklist.

Steps in the funding process

1.  Identify funding opportunity

2.  Complete the necessary application materials

3.  Approvals

  • Institutional Review Board compliance: ALL proposed research involving human subjects requires all personnel associated with the project to be certified via the successful completion of the CITI online human subjects training module . An approved protocol MUST be obtained prior to contact with humans.
  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)Compliance: All animal users MUST be registered with the Animal Surveillance Program in Occupational Health Services. An approved protocol MUST be obtained before animals can be purchased. Questions involving submissions of protocols to the IACUC should be addressed to Mickie Bell-Frazier at (443) 287-3738. An online training module MUST be completed by all animal users.
  • Complete the electronic JHU Information Sheet (see your departmental budget analyst for assistance)
  • Signatures - Be sure to allow sufficient review time prior to submission due date - At least 1 week is suggested
  • Be sure that you have signed your application
  • Have your advisor or sponsor sign your application, if required
  • Submit your proposal with 'JHU Information Sheet' to your department administrative office for review and signature by the Administrator and Chairman
  • Submit your proposal to Student Funding Resources for review.  SFR will submit your application to Research Administration for final review and signature by the appropriate University Official

4.  Assemble and photocopy your proposal according to the instructions in the program announcement

5.  Mail your application on time - some agencies require proposals to be postmarked by the due date, others must receive it by the due date.
