Created with a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in September 2005 as an Academic Research Center of Excellence (ACE), the Center aims to reduce and prevent youth violence by creating and supporting positive environments for youth and families in Baltimore City.

 The Center aims to capture media reports, including radio reports and other field reports highlighting the seriousness of youth violence in addition to current efforts aimed at reducing violence in Baltimore City. The Center collaborates with WYPR, a local newstation that provides both on-air and online news content. The new radio series, Growing Up in Baltimore, begins this Fall.

On September 8th, Dr. Robert Balfanz spoke with Marc Steiner as part of an ongoing series of stories with Urbanite Magazine addressing the problem of truancy in schools. Robert Balfanz is a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Center for Social Organization of Schools (CSOS). He is also associate director of the Talent Development Middle and High School Project, which used CSOS research to start a school designed to help more students graduate from high school. A partnership between the Baltimore City Health Department and Living Communities, Safe Streets is modeled after Chicago’s Cease-Fire Program, which aims to reduce shootings among the 14-25 age group in Baltimore City.
